Every Goodbye Ain’t Gone: Trauma and Grief in the time of COVID-19

It is with deep appreciation that the Justice and Peace Foundation announces the receipt of a grant from the Funeral Services Foundation as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This funding allows us to fund the JPF project entitled Every Goodbye Ain’t Gone: Trauma and Grief in the time of COVID-19.

The goal is to support the grief process, to innovate and disseminate best practices for funerals and public memorials, and to provide self-care tools for African American religious leaders in this crisis. This will be accomplished by six months of collaborative, interactive webinars led by Lisa Brown, PhD, ABPP; Rev. Darrell Armstrong, MDiv, EdS–MFT, DD; and Dr. Phyllis Carter. The churches will be chosen from geographical regions who have experienced multiple deaths due to COVID-19 and have networks of influence in their denominations.

To reach that goal, JPF recruited African American churches of various denominations and from a variety of geographical locations nationally to become involved. Each church has chosen a representative to commit to attend bi-monthly online workshops for 6 months; the chosen representatives also receive coaching about setting up and maintaining a bereavement ministry, and gain skills in self-care for ministerial leaders. While this participation is not compensated an incentive was offered to all representatives.

As the project advances, the best practices and resources that are developed through this collaborative project will be made available on the JPF website for all.

The goals of the project are:

  • Support the leaders and ministers of these churches as they move through grief
  • Educate church leaders about the best knowledge and practices concerning trauma, grief and healing
  • Help the churches to create a grief support group for their church and community
  • Conduct basic research through case studies about the grieving process in the African American community
